Gardeners all over the world rejoice as winter makes way for spring. This is the time to sow seeds and plant saplings. A lovely garden brimming with colorful flowers is a great joy. But even greater joy stems from growing fresh produce in your gardens. Many people complain that they live in apartments or tiny houses and do not have access to a garden. But a garden can be made any where. If you have a balcony, you can have a garden.
If you are a beginner at gardening, start by planting these vegetables and herbs.
Tomatoes: Try growing a few different varieties so you can have tomatoes for salads and also for cooking.
Vegetables: Easy and quick vegetables to grow are radishes, beets, bhindi, eggplant, zucchini, lauki and green onions. You can grow all these in pots or in large bags filled with soil.
Herbs: Grow your own coriander, mint, methi and other herbs in pots!
Salad: You can grow cucumbers, lettuce and spinach in large pots or bags.
For creepers like cucumbers and lauki, tie string from the pots to the ceiling of your balcony so that the vines have something to grow and latch on to.
When you enjoy your first batch of produce, there will never be any looking back! Involve your children in this project so that they learn and gain some valuable experience.
