An Indian woman died recently in Ireland, and this has created a huge stir all over the world. Savita Halappanavar was an Indian dentist who lived in Galway. Savita was 17 weeks pregnant when she suffered a miscarriage and was admitted to the Galway University Hopsital, complaining of severe back pain. Savita and her husband Praveen asked the doctors to terminate the pregnancy, but were repeatedly declined their request and the reply they got was, “This is a Catholic country.” As a result, Savita died of blood poisoning due to the miscarriage.
Abortion is illegal in Ireland. It is one thing to believe that a certain thing is morally wrong, but to hold your views so dear that they can cost someone’s life is plain stupidity. How can religion or a law decide that an unborn foetus is more important than the life of a living woman, it’s mother?
What do you think? Do you agree that abortion should not be banned completely?
