A recent report from the World Obesity Federation sheds light on why some countries have faced an extremely high number of COVID deaths while others have gotten away with relatively low death rates due to COVID.
There is a link between obesity and COVID death rate. Countries with a high percentage of obese people are also the countries with the highest COVID death rates. Some examples are Belgium, Portugal, USA, UK and Italy. These are countries with more than 50% obesity rate and these are also the countries with highest number of COVID deaths. In comparison is Vietnam, which has second lowest percentage of obese people and the lowest COVID death rate in the world.
This has prompted the World Obesity Foundation to call for quicker access to COVID tests and vaccines for obese people as they are at a higher risk of death due to COVID. This also serves as a lesson to the world that investing in health and fitness is the best investment for any country.
