Twice a year we celebrate the holy festval of nine nights – the Navratri festival. There are no written rules about this festival. Different people celebrate this festival as per their own customs and beliefs. This is why some of us will eat certain things during the Navratri and others will not. There are also no rules about how much or how o ften you can eat. Like most other things in Hinduism, Navratri fasting is also very flexible. One general guideline is that cereals are not eaten during these nine days. So traditional cereals like wheat and rice are substituted by alternate cereals or non cereals like sago, chestnut, amaranth, samak rice and buckwheat. Most of these non cereals are rich in protein and carbohydrates.
Most devout people who fast during this festival end up with an extra kilo or two after the festival. This is because these non cereals can be turned into really yummy fried snacks and food items. From pooris to pakoras, we enjoy the Navratri food too much to give up our fasting! Add a generous amount of potatoes to every meal during the festival – can you expect to not gain weight?
If you do not wish to gain weight during the Navratri festival, don’t turn your fast into a feast.
– Plan only one full meal in the day with your yummy non cereal snacks etc. It is best to enjoy this meal before sunset – around 5 or 6 in the evening.
– For the rest of the day, enjoy small snacks of nuts, fruit, juice, milk, lassi, coconut water etc. Drink plenty of fluids during the day to keep yourself hydrated and full of energy.
If you follow this rule, you will not gain any weight during your favorite festival. Some lucky people might even lose a little!
