One of the fastest growing economies in the world is now lagging behind in the ranks of Global Hunger Index. India continues to have some serious widespread of hunger and poverty in its veins of economy. Being one of the front-runners in the global economy, India ranked 97th among 118 developing countries in terms of hunger and poverty, as per GHI statistics.

The Growth Index was calculated by taking four parameters:  shares of undernourished population, wasted and stunted children aged under 5, and infant mortality rate of the same age group. India has made some clicking growth in terms of hunger and poverty since 1998 but still ranks very low in the survey.

Of the 131 countries premeditated, data was accessible for 118 countries. For the first time, this year two measures of child hunger -wasting and stunting -is being used to make a complete picture of world hunger scenario. Wasting refers to low heft in relation to a child’s height, reflecting grave undernutrition. Stunting refers to the shortage in height in relation to age, reflecting chronic undernutrition.

Although India ranks 2nd as the highest populated country in the world after China, it does promote various programmes like Child Welfare Programme, Mid-day meal programme, etc. But still get haunted by poverty and malnutrition.

India was tiered 83 in 2000 and 102 in 2008 with GHI scores of 38.2 and 36 respectively. This infers that, while hunger levels in India have lessened slightly, the upgrading has been outshined by numerous other republics. Hence India’s ranking is shoddier today than it was 15 years ago.

Malnutrition and poverty are now an alarming situation in India and if it is not resolved the case may be very much in not favour towards growth and expansion with taking majority people in hand.
