When the COVID pandemic struck in 2020, it was seen as a disease that targeted the old. World over, people and governments began developing strategies on how to keep the elderly safe. From isolation to early vaccination, everything was arranged to keep the elderly safe. But this has suddenly changed. Today we see young people falling prey to COVID and we read news of very young deaths every day. It is distressing and scary, but more than that this is mind-boggling. How did the focus of the pandemic switch from old to the young?
ICMR chief Dr Balram Bhargava explains that there are 2 reasons behind increasing number of young victims in the second COVID wave. The first reason is that as numbers began to decline, young people started getting careless. The elderly are still cautious and taking all necessary precautions. But the young people started going out and stopped wearing their masks. This shifted the focus of the pandemic quickly. The second reason is that new variants have developed over time and these variants do not spare the young.
So the result is that all people are equally at risk. Do not let your youth guide you into any misconceptions of safety. The only safety is in vaccination, isolation and safe practices like masking and sanitization.
