Health magazines and websites often write about dextoxifying the body with detox diets. So many people follow these diets blindly. But before you do that, take a moment and think whether you really need to.
What Is A Detox Diet?
The principle of detox diets is that our body is fed many toxins in the natural course of life through junk food, cigarette smoke, pesticides, alcohol and caffeine. In order to clean up our bodies, we need to give our bodies a rest by taking up a detox diet. While you are on a detox diet, usually you are not allowed to have dairy, meat, eggs, coffee, tea, sugar, cereals, alcohol an cigarettes. Clear soups, juices, water and fruit are usually allowed. A detox diet is supposed to last for 2-4 days.
Do Detox Diets Work?
Yes, detox diets work to an extent. When you cut out junk food, sugar and carbs from your diet for a few days every now and then, good things are bound to happen. So if you try detox diets regularly, you may eventually lose a little weight. Cutting the junk out may also have a good effect on your skin.
But yet, you should not overdo it. The simple reason is that our lungs and kidneys are perfectly equipped to flush out the harmful toxins. If you overdo the dieting, you may end up feeling weak and stressed out. Don’t forget, your body needs the carbs to run itself. Going on detox diets robs you of dietary minerals, vitamins, fibre and carbs. So if at all you decide to detox, keep the dieting within a limit.
