For over a year now, the nation has been hooked to their TV screens for news related to COVID. TV channels do not mince their words, they show everything, repeatedly and in much detail. So we have been bombarded with stories that have moved us so much that we have been haunted at nights thinking of the unimaginable horrors in hospitals and funeral sites. There is nobody in India who is not praying for this to end now.
Amongst all this destruction and death around us, there are stories of human behaviour that show us a lot about humanity. There have been stories of some crooks selling fake medicines and injections. There was even a story of someone selling a fire extinguisher as an Oxygen cylinder. There has been very upsetting news of some people hoarding Oxygen cylinders or black marketing them for profit. We have heard stories of taxi and ambulance drivers asking for huge amounts of money for their service. Recently there was news of a COVID patient’s rape in a hospital. Today there was a story in the media of a man offering Oxygen cylinder to a neighbour in exchange for sex.
We have read about isolation of some poor people who fell prey to COVID. We have seen images of people carrying dead bodies of their loved ones on a bicycle. There has been heart wrenching news of people finding it hard to perform last rites of their loved ones because of this isolation.
Amongst all this disturbing news, there have been few rays of hope. The story of an unknown and unidentified man bringing an Oxygen cylinder at 2 am, in response to a request on social media is one such story. A Delhi cabbie who helped an elderly woman reach a COVID facility and get help is also winning hearts. There are many stories of people trying to lend a helping hand to someone in distress. This just shows that we have good and evil within us. COVID is just showing us the good and bad side of humanity. It is for us to decide which side we want to be on.
