Ayushmann Khurrana’s Article 15's screening banned in Roorkee, Uttarakhand; Here’s why
A film that has been facing the heat from the day the trailer was released is Ayushmann Khurrana starrer, Article 15.
The film’s tagline stated that it is inspired by real incidents and hence, many people were offended by this fact that it was based on the infamous Badaun rape case. Also, many objected that Article 15 is anti-brahmin and shows the entire brahmin community in a bad light. Due to this, in many cities Article 15 faced protests and the recent news is coming from Roorkee, Uttarakhand.
Yes, after facing the heat in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, Article 15 has been banned in Roorkee as well citing law and order disruptions as a reason.
The SDM (Sub Divisional Magistrate) mentioned to Bombay Times that the representatives of Hindu Sena met him and raised concerns that the film shows a community in a negative light. Hence, the screening of Article 15 was banned in Roorkee to avoid any law and order problems.
The film is centred around the rape investigation of 3 girls who demand a raise from their Brahmin superior.
Ayushmann Khurrana is playing IPS Ayan Ranjan who gets to the bottom of the case and vows to put the culprits behind the bars. The SDM Roorkee said, “Representatives of Hindu Sena met me on Friday and expressed their concerns that the film, Article 15, portrays a particular community in a poor light. They demanded a ban on the screening. My view was that if the film is screened in the city, it could lead to law and order issues.” The orders were issues to RR cinema to cancel its shows in the city. However, in the rest of the state, the movie is being screened.
A theatre employee added, “We don’t want to invite any trouble, particularly because the SDM’s order states that we will be held responsible if something untoward happens.”
This is not the first time that a film’s screening has been disrupted over matters related to a community. Back in December, Kedarnath also faced similar issues in Uttarakhand and Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmaavat also had to face the heat of the Karni Sena. In other states, Ayusmann Khurrana and Anubhav Sinha’s film is doing well and is going strong.
