India’s most loved skin care cream Fair & Lovely is all set for a brand makeover! Hindustan Lever Ltd has announced a big decision – they will drop the word ‘Fair’ from the brand name. There has been a lot of criticism for fairness products in recent years, this decision should proably have been taken a few years ago. But now with all the big talk about Black Lives Matter, focus has once again been drawn to skin care products that damage a person’s soul more than they do any good to the skin!
There have been online petitions, signed by thousands of people that have demanded for these products to be discontinued because they promote a singular idea of beauty and create feelings of being less worthy in dark skinned people. HUL has now announced that they will not only drop the workd Fair, but will also drop all references to lightening, whitening etc in all their promotional material.
Sunny Jain, a company representative says, “We are fully committed to having a global portfolio of skin care brands that is inclusive and cares for all skin tones, celebrating greater diversity of beauty.
“We recognise that the use of the words ‘fair’, ‘white’ and ‘light’ suggest a singular ideal of beauty that we don’t think is right, and we want to address this.”
What are your thoughts about this? Is it a good decision or is it too little, too late?
