There was a time inthe 80s and early 90s when we had great quality TV content on Doordarshan. Then came the cable television networks and we were ushered into the era of daily soaps. Prominent amongst the content providers was the Queen of telly – Ekta Kapoor. But this also brought on a decline in the quality of content. If you really think about it, how can quality be maintained if the production team and cast have to bring out an episode every day for 10 years???

The decay in quality was absorbed well by a generation, but the Gen X today is not too keen on our daily TV soaps. They prefer to watch their entertainment online. It started with Youtube, but now we have lots of desi web series that are shared on the internet. The web series are more realistic, have less drama and are often very bold. They get away without much censorship because they are not telecast on mainstream channels. But more and more people are becoming hooked to this digital content.

Does this mean TV, as we know it, is coming to an end?
