Abhijeet Sawant, who became an overnight celebrity after winning the first season of singing reality show, Indian Idol recently shared his view on the ongoing controversy around the show. Though he tinted the fact that reality shows these days bank a lot on bawling, emotional stories, he also shared that it is not completely the makers fault as the audience likes watching these things.
Abhijeet Sawant linked national musical reality shows like Indian Idol to their regional cousins. “If you look at the regional reality shows, then the audience will hardly know about the background of the contestants. Their focus is only on singing, but in Hindi reality shows, the tragic and sad stories of contestants are redeemed. The focus is only on that,” Abhijeet told a leading media channel.
Giving his own example, Abhijeet said there was a time that he forgot the lyrics of the song while performing for Indian Idol and gave up midway. The judges gave him another chance. He said if this had happened in today’s time, it would have been exploited for all its dramatic budding.
Nevertheless, he was more substantial when it came to the Kishore Kumar episode of Indian Idol 12 after which judges Neha Kakkar and Himesh Reshammiya were also spun for what many perceived as their bad performance. Abhijeet said it is unfair to compare any singer with Kishore Kumar. He said that all singers have their own style and are free to pay a tribute in their own unique way. Criticizing the episode, Amit Kumar had said he didn’t enjoy it and wanted to stop it.
Well, do you think the slam made by Abhijeet Sawant holds any truth? Are we actually more inclined to a sobbing story than actual performance?
