Gul Panag is not the first Bollywood actor to try this formula. Amitabh Bachchan did it, Rajesh Khanna did it, Jaya Prada, Jaya Bachchan…and many other actors have tried to enter politics when they found their Bollywood career at doldrums.
Gul Panag has now formally been announced as AAP’s Lok Sabha candidate from Chandigarh. A non-existant acting career is not the only reason Gul has decided to enter the dirty game of politics. Gul’s father Lt. Gen (Retd.) H S Panag is one of the founding members of the Aam Aadmi Party, and has probably had some influence on his daughter’s decision. When quizzed about her entry into politics, this is what Gul said, “Chandigarh is my home. I was born and brought up in Chandigarh. Like you, I also want an atmosphere of clean politics. That is why I have joined this. It is my humble request to all of you to become a member of this movement.”
The beautiful actor has come a long way since she won the Miss India pageant in 1999. That was how she made her entry into Bollywood. Though Gul has worked in over a dozen films in Hindi and Punjabi, she has never really had much success with any of her films. She got married to her boyfriend Rishi Attari in March 2011 at a Gurudwara in Chandigarh. Since Gul is a lover of motorbikes, her marriage procession consisted of riders on over 20 motorcycles. Some of the bike riders were women. Groom Rishi arrived on a motorcycle, with Gul sitting in the sidecar. Romantic?
Let’s hope Gul’s political career works out a lot better than her acting career. We wish her the best!
