No, Tulsi Virani aka Smriti Iraani is not related to Mahatma Gandhi or Indira Gandhi or Sonia Gandhi or any other Gandhi for that matter! But she will soon be talked about in the same breath as the name “Gandhi”. Why, you wonder?
Simple reason yaar! Tulsi is soon going to produce a Bilingual TV serial based on Mahatma Gandhi’s life. Yes, after all those movies based on his life, the Mahatma will now be the hero of a daily soap. Nothing wrong with that actually! Our youngsters and children do need to learn about the independence struggle and Gandhi ji’s contribution to it. But more than that, we will all get to know more about his personal life.
Smriti says that she wants to show more of Gandhi ji’s family and personal life. Everyone knows about all the sacrifices made by the Mahatma, but few people know about the sacrifices made by his family to accommodate his role in the freedom struggle. Smriti wants to show this facet of the family in her show. She would like to show the sacrifices that the family made, but went unnoticed.
In a time when mindless comedies, innumerable singing and dancing shows and dumb family dramas rule the roost on the small screen, this might be a welcome change. Smriti plans to shoot the scenes on real locations to bring a touch of authenticity. Probably this will be the first Indian soap to be shot in South Africa, right? It will also be telecast for American and British audiences, besides the Indians. Indian telly is literally going places!!!
