Meet Pusarla Venkata Sindhu, the newest sporting sensation in our country. What makes Sindhu a sporting star is the fact that she has become the first Indian woman to play in the Semi Finals of the ongoing World Badminton Championships. Sindhu won a Bronze in the tournament after defeating the former World No 1 Shixian Wang. Sindhu brought home the bronze, ending a 30 year drought of medals. 30 years ago, Prakash Padukone had won the Bronze in the World Bedminton Championships.
Sindhu trains with the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad. She is also supported by the NGO Olympic Gold Quest, that identifies and supports Indan athletes in their quest for medals at international sporting events.
