Shahrukh Khan and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have a history of sorts. A few years ago Deepika Padukone made her debut with Red Chillies Entertainment’s “Om Shanti Om”. Sanjay Leela Bhansali launched Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor in “Saawariya” at the same time. Both films clashed and poor Ranbir and Sonam had to suffer the embarassment of a flop debut! Why do big films release on the same date and lose out on big business?
Shahrukh and Sanjay Leela Bhansali clashed once again a few days back. Everyone thought that the SRK-Kajol starrer film directed by Rohit Shetty would be a big time crowd puller. We thought it would be a 300 crore film if left on its own. But even in a competitive environment, it would surely make 200 crores.
But this time Bhansali has beaten SRK fair and square. Though BM started on a low note, the word of mouth publicity added to it’s appeal and the numbers have been improving steadily. On the other hand, Dilwale has had very poor word of mouth report so the numbers have been slumping over the last 10 days. Dilwale has grossed 118 crores and BM has totalled 126 crores. Clearly the Bhansali film has beaten Red Chillies’ film. Industry pundits predict that the lifetime collections of BM will stand at around 160 crores. But Dilwale is predicted to collect only 135-140 crores in lifetime.
Shahrukh Khan has nobody but himself to blame! He has to stop thinking that the audience wants to watch the same thing over and over! Hopefully Raees and Fan will do better next year.
