After having played a couple of big innings on the big screen as well as the small screen, Amitabh Bachchan now dons a new role. The Big B becomes a Newsreader on TV as a part of the promotional campaign for Rann.

This is yet another “sounds interesting” film from Ram Gopal Verma’s Factory, with Amitabh Bachchan playing a media magnate. The film takes a look into the way the media works today. The film shows how news is created and presented today with the sole aim to create sensationalism. Vijay Harshvardhan Malik, the character played by Mr. Bachchan is a media baron who is behind the mix up of news and sensationalism.

So promoting films at singing and dancing shows on TV is passe. Everyone wants to try something new with the promotion of his/her film. From giving haircuts to creating “book vs. film” controversies, film makers are trying every trick in the book to generate publicity and interest. This is where the newsreading comes in. Apparently, Amitabh Bachchan has been shot presenting the highlights of 2009 on a news program.

The 30 minute long news capsule, anchored by Mr. Bachchan, shows all the major headlines of 2009, including Rehman’s Oscar and the Mumbai attacks. A number of TV channels have been given this news capsule by the producers of Rann, with instructions to play it every time a new movie is about to be released. The channels have been asked to increase the frequency of telecast around January 29, the date of release of Rann. We must say that this unique promotional campaign takes film promotion to an entirely new level!

After having played a little boy, a genie and a ghost, playing a newsreader must be like a cakewalk for Mr. Bachchan. There’s no doubt that he will have the audiences hanging on to his every word! So next time you switch on the TV, watch out for a handsome and dashing newsreader!
