This is one accusation that popular writer Chetan Bhagat will definitely agree with. After the recent Aamir-Chetan-Vinod Chopra controversy regarding the credit for the story of 3 Idiots, this comes as yet another blow to the Khan who likes to be called a “perfectionist”.

At a recent meeting between Bollywood producers and writers, Aamir Khan managed to earn the ire of the writers’ group by siding with the producers. Considering that Aamir has now branched into production and direction, it is not very surprising that he took this stand. But he irked the writers by asserting that it was a star who made a song popular and not the lyrics. He went as far as saying that the lyrics of a song had little or no impact on its popularity!

Javed Akhtar, one of the most respected and popular writers and lyricists of our times took on Aamir and retorted with the example of Papa Kehte Hain, a hit number from Aamir’s first hit movie QSQT. Case in point, Aamir? This left nothing more to say as Aamir was proved wrong with an example from his own life. The writers’ lobby felt that Aamir was trying to take away credit from them.

Amidst all these allegations, Aamir Khan decided to resign from the 10-member committee formed by the government to look into the proposed amendments to the Copyright Act. Here is what he had to say in a letter to Kapil Sibal, “I am grateful to you for inviting me to be part of a committee to discuss the various issues regarding amendments to the Copyright Act. However in light of these public attacks on me I don’t think I am comfortable to be part of this committee.”

Saying that he wanted to contribute but could not, Aamir wrote, “In the past 26 years of my involvement with the film industry, I may have made mistakes, but never have I knowingly been dishonest or unfair in my dealings, whether as an assistant director, actor, producer or director. I feel I have a lot to contribute to the ongoing debate but I cannot make any meaningful contribution in this atmosphere. Aggression of this type leaves me feeling very disillusioned and sad and I am unable to function. Therefore I request you to accept my resignation from this committee and please appoint another person in my place.”

Though we would not want to cast any aspertions on Aamir’s sincerity, we cannot help but be symathetic towards the writers. Whether Aamir agrees or not, it is NOT the stars who define the success or failure of a movie. A strong script is a compulsory ingredient for the success of any film. But the writers rarely get their due from the industry or the audiences. It is only when they start getting adequate compensation and appreciation that the writers will be motivated to come up with original and interesting stories.

The panel also includes Javed Akhtar, Boney Kapoor, Mukesh Bhatt, Vishal Bharadwaj, Vishal Dadlani, Prasoon Joshi, Anjum Rajabli, Madhu Manthena and Bhushan Kumar.
