All India Ophthalmology Society (AIOS) has revealed that there is a rising incidence of preventable blindness in the country, and they are linking this with the ongoing COVID 19 pandemic. Mahipal Singh Sachdev, the President of AIOS said, "With changing lifestyle patterns and excessive usage of digital screens by people of all age brackets, there is an exponential increase in the number of patients suffering from mild to severe vision problems which are preventable or treatable."
He also stressed on the need of spreading awareness about preventable causes of blindness like Cataract and Glaucoma.
On a personal level we all need to be careful about the vision health of our families. We need to make an effort to reduce the use of screens to keep ourselves occupied. Children, especially are very vulnerable to the rising incidence of vision problems and we need to safeguard their eyes!
