Breast Self Examination
When: Experts say this should be done once ever month. It is preferable if it is done on the same date every month so that you are at the same spot in your monthly cycle every time and changes due to menstrual cycle do not affect your comparisons.
Where: It is best to do it in front of a mirror so that you can see and feel at the same time.
Areas: You need to check all the areas where there is breast tissue. So apart from the breasts, also check armpits and up to the collarbone.
How: Start by taking a look and trying to watch out for any change in size or shape. Do this with your arms raised up and also with your arms by the side of the body. Also look for any other changes in the skin or tissue. Next, feel the area with your hands, looking for lumps or any other changes that do not feel normal. To compare, fee the same area on the other side.
Watch out for: The things you should see a doctor about will be-
Rash on the skin
Change in size or shape
Bleeding or other discharge
Change in nipple position
Discomfort or pain in one breast
Purckering or dimpling of the skin
If you see these changes, it is best to see your doctor and have it checked out professionally. Remember, early detection saves lives!
