In a shocking development, a Khap Panchayat in Haryana has asked women to stop wearing Ghoongats!
Khap Panchayats have been under fire for almost a decade - for promoting backwardness and curbing rights of women. After many honour killings in the state, Khap panchayats have not only faced huge backlash, but are also facing opposition from within the community.
Is this why this Khap chief asked women to shun the ghoongat?
As you know, a few states in India like Haryana, Rajasthan, MP, UP and Punjab still have the women wearing ghoongat in some areas of these states. The ghoongat was supposed to be a mark of respect, but is now of no apparent use. This was reiterated by 66-year-old chief of Malik Gathwala Khap, Baljeet Malik who said, "Time has come to end the age-old traditions that are not relevant today. Expecting women to remain confined under veils is foolishness. It blocks their vision and does not let them breathe properly. Happiness and peace come to those houses where daughters-in-law are loved like real daughters."
You will be surprised to know that this decision will affect the daily lives of women in over 700 villages in UP, Haryana, Rajasthan and Punjab!
This little change in thought brings us new hope!
