We have all been hearing reports about plastic rice coming in from China. While the general public is scared that they have been feeding plastic to their children, even authorities are concerned about the impact on our public health. But is plastic rice for real, or is it just someone's imagination?
It seems that the scare is not without basis! People from Telangana and Hyderabad have reported that cooked rice rolled into balls bounces like a real ball made of rubber. People have reported various ailments like gastric problems and modified behaviour caused by consumption of plastic rice. The government has also cracked down on merchants and is collecting samples for testing. Meanwhile what can you do to make sure you don't eat plastic rice?
How to Identfy Plastic Rice
- Put a match to a handful of rice. If burning rice smells like plastic - it is plastic!
- Put a spoonful of rice in a bowl of water and stir it. If the rice floats, it is made of plastic. Real rice is too heavy to float on the water.
- Fry a little rice in hot oil. Plastic rice will melt and sink to the bottom!
- If you observe that there is no fungal growth on cooked rice even after 2 days, it is definitely not real rice!
