With news of 3 horrid rape cases coming from Haryana within just 4 days, it is hard to think of the state as anything except a place where women are unsafe. For long Delhi has been called the rape capital of India. This is primarily because of its borders with UP and Haryana, two states that not only provide a safe haven to criminals - but are also feudal and backward societies. The country has not even gotten over the Nirbhaya rape case yet, and we have another Nirbhaya here! On one hand we have the SC upholding death sentences of the Nirbhaya rapists, and almost at the same time, the Rohtak gangrape incident occurs. Does this mean that even fear of a death sentence will not stop these criminals?
The Rohtak victim was kidnapped, gangraped, murdered and mutilated just because she exercised her right to refuse a man. Next we hear of a 10 year old girl who is 5 months pregnant because of her stepfather! Latest is another gangrape in a moving car on the streets of Gurgaon. What is wrong with our men? When did our men get so sick? It seems like this is not a country for women.
The Central government has pushed for gender equality programs like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao. As a result, after a very long time the sex ratio in Haryana has improved. It is certainly creditable. But there is a long way to go before women can feel safe in Haryana. The government now needs to focus on education and changing the feudal mindsets in the state.
