For decades we have looked at single people with pity. We have dished out the advice to get married to everyone who we saw without a spouse. But is it really that good advice? Look at the two people in this picture. What do Salman and Sushmita have in common? They are both incredibly good looking, happy and single!
Is It Better to Be Single?
There are many research studies that show being single has its own advantages.
Solitude vs Loneliness: One can be lonely even when one is surrounded with people, friends and relatives. A lot of married people feel lonely. Solitude, on the other hand, is something positive associated with being alone. Psychologists from University of Massachusetts have used the words "freedom, creativity, intimacy, and spirituality" as associated with solitude. Single people have more opportunity to experience solitude than the married ones!
No Consolation Prize: People who buckle under pressure to marry often have to compromise in their choice of partner. But people who decide to remain single never do that. They get into a relationship only if they think it is what they want. If it doesn't seem to work out, they simply exit. They don't settle for the consolation prize!
Good for the Heart: A research study that kept track of 9000 middle aged people for over 8 years had some interesting conclusions. People who had never married had the best results for heart health. People who were married all through the study came in a close second. People who were in and out of marriages had the worst heart health. Relationships usually come with heartache, right?
Healthy Body: It is a no brainer that single people take better care of their bodies than the married ones, who somehow feel they don't need to look good anymore! Another factor that comes into play is that single people have more time to spend on themselves, so they take better care of their body and health.
Good Friendships: Single people tend to have strong bonds with their friends. This is because they have ample time to plan activities, go out and have fun with friends. Married people tend to spend most time with their families and are not able to keep up with their friends.
All in all, being single is not at all as bad as we thought, is it?
