4-Methylimidazole. Have you ever heard of the term before? I guess no, but you will be amazed that you nearly consume it almost every day.
4-Methylimidazole (4-MEI or 4-MEL) is a chemical present in caramel color. 4-Methylimidazole is added to widely used beverages and it is mostly consumed by the majority of people around the world. Levels of a by-product of a caramel food color, 4-methylimidazole (4-MEI), are highly abundant in soft drinks and disbursed in adequate quantities and they surely can increase the risk of developing cancer.
As per the research conducted, 4-MeI has been linked to seizures and tumour growth in some animal studies when given in high doses. There are heavy chances that the same problem may generate its path in human bodies too if consumed in high doses.
A common ingredient in various soft drinks is the caramel color. Do you ever imagine in how much quantity do you consume these beverages in daily schedule? You can just imagine on how much you are exposed to uncalled body dysfunction.
Since 4-MEI does seem to be a probable food wellbeing peril, one should limit their consumption of soft drink and wrapped foods consumption. We all should appeal to the FSSAI to set new limits and impose warning messages on the label for 4-MEI, similar to the other country’s law. Even in the absence of any supervisory obligations, it should be a responsible behaviour on the part of all manufacturers, not just soft drinks, to voluntarily reduce the amount of 4-MEI (if it exceeds the danger limits). After all, isn't it better to stumble on the side of caution?
Try to remain cautious and concerned enough to elect healthy choices.
