Originally this diet is supposed to have been the medically advised treatment for people with Celiac Disease. People who suffer from this disease cannot digest Gluten and hence are advised a Gluten free diet by their doctors. But the benefits were noticed and extrapolated to people who did not suffer from this disease but needed to lose a few pounds.

Doctors say that the Gluten free diet is not for everyone. The Gluten free diet eliminates grains like Wheat, Rye and Barley. It resembles a low carb diet and hence the benefits also resemble those of a low carb diet. But this diet is found to be deficient in Vitamins, Minerals and Fiber.
Many people who embark on this diet have found themselves a few pounds heavier when they end it. The reason is that commercially sold food products that claim to be Gluten free are high in fats, sugar and calories. The benefits of low carbohydrates are ofset by the high fat and sugar consumption.
So experts advise that nobody should go Gluten free unless advised to do so by a medical practitioner.
