So what was all the fuss about? After watching the film, one can't help but wonder why the CBFC had wanted to tear this film apart with 89 cuts. Udta Punjab is just what it claims to be, a film about the drugs issue in Punjab. It neither names any political party nor any particular person. It is just a film about the very real state of affairs in Punjab.
Cutting aside all the controversy, let's talk about the film. Abhishek Chaubey has done an excellent job of weaving characters together in a tale that ties unknown people together. Shahid Kapoor plays Tommy Singh, a rock star who is addicted to drugs. Shahid has essayed this role with so much you cannot imagine anyone credibility that you just can't imagine anyone else playing Tommy Singh. Alia Bhatt plays a migrant labourer who gets herself embroiled with a drugs gang and becomes an abused user. Kareena plays a doctor who works with addicts, and Diljit Dosanjh plays a cop.
There is not much of a story line really, but an honest portrayal of how things stand. The film shows how drugs run through all the strata of society and how everyone has a role to play.
This is not the film for you if you are looking for a family entertainer. This is a film that will leave you disturbed and will keep you awake in the night. You will worry about your own children, and rightly so!
