The Food nd Drug Administration in Ghana has banned the use of hydroquinone in all cosmetic products. Hydroquinone is the bleaching agent that is used in the manufacture of all skin lightening products. So effectively, Ghana has banned the use of fairness creams! The reason cited for this step is that hydroquinone is a possible carcinogen. It is already banned in the US, Japan, Australia and EU.

A spokesperson of the Ghana FDA has said, “Concerning skin lightening products, we are saying that from August 2016, all products containing hydroquinone will not be allowed into the country. From 2016, the acceptance of skin lightening products is going to be zero.”

We consider ourselves to be far superior to any African country. Yet this step firmly puts us in our place. Women all over India are struggling with self loathing and self doubt because the society has always told them they are not beautiful coz they have dark skin! Here is this African country that has banned use of a skin lightening ingredient because it is more concerned about the health of its women than the colour of their skin. When will we learn that the colour of skin is not what defines beauty? Will India ever ban the use of such cancer causing ingredients of fairness products?
