A study recently published in the journal Neurology has linked exercising and brain size. The study worked with 1500 subjects, none of who suffred from any heart disease or congnitive disorders like dementia. At the beginning of this study, the fitness levels of all these people were recorded. Twenty years later, their fitness levels were recorded again, and MRIs were also taken. The resultant finding was that people who did not fare too well on the fitness tests were more likely to have experienced brain shrinkage over the last twenty years. This study shows that not exercising in your 30s and 40s can lead to shrinkage of the brain. In another study, it was shown that different types of exercise affect the brain differently. Strength training was said to be the best for avoiding brain shrinkage. Does this make a case for getting off your bum and starting an exercise routine now?
