Nina Davuluri did us all proud when she became the first woman of Indian background to win the Miss America beauty pageant. But her happiness turned sour in moments as the internet flooded with racist comments from Americans. While some ignorant people linked her with terrorists and included 9/11 in their catty comments, other ignorant people asked how could a non-white be Miss America!

But Nina has taken these nasty racist comments in her stride. When asked about her reaction to this outburst of racism, Nina calmly said, "I have to rise above that. I always viewed myself as first and foremost American." She added that her America was one of diversity and inclusion. "I'm thankful there are children watching at home who can finally relate to a new Miss America."
