Before starting any exercise program, ensure that you have consulted your doctor or physician. Memsaab.com is not responsible for any injury or loss caused by reading any article(s) on www.memsaab.com This is an age old debate and does not merit any argument. Should women lift weights or not? The answer to this question is a resounding YES!

Many women and educated ones at that fear that lifting weights would make them look like the female version of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Nothing could be farther from this. Weight training actually makes you look better by toning up your figure. Weight training actually makes the bones stronger and lessens the risk of osteoporosis in women. It helps in increasing bone mass and density and also makes the joints stronger. If at all, weight training should be religously pursued by women of all ages.

You may well say that all this is fine, but how does one go about starting to weight train. Well, its actually quite simple. Just walk into the local sports shop and ask them for between 2.5 to 4 kgs of weights. Ask for free weights aka dumbells. Now that you have got the basic stuff, ask the salesperson to show you some supporters and weight lifting gloves. Thats all that you need for a start. If you do not feel like working out at home, please head to the nearest gym. There are trainers available in gyms nowadays who can get you started on working out with weights. The exercises are quite simple and one can isolate body parts to work on target areas. Like let's say you want to tone up your arms, then you work on your biceps and triceps. You lift weights such that you target your arms only. Or if you want to work on your thighs, you do squats and lunges. Similarly you can work on your shoulders by doing the military press which is holding the weights at shoulder level and then bringing them up over your head such that your palms face each other and then bringing the weights down back to shoulder level.

In fact if you search on the internet you will find the basic postures that need to be maintained while lifting weights. Weights work on your muscle and help in getting rid of unwanted fat. Your stomach can become flat as you increase the intensity of your weight training. Combined with running and aerobics, weight training can really help you lose weight faster. If you weight train even 4-5 days a week, it can help you lose weight. You may be scared of hurting yourself and this is a very valid concern.

However, you can start with light weights. Do remember to wear a belt for your back and gloves on your hands so that your palms do not bear the brunt of lifting weights. Also it would be a good idea to read manuals or hire a trainer for the initial period till the time you are comfortable doing weights alone. we will cover more on this topic in the next article on this subject. In the meanwhile happy weight training!!!
