Break Free Of "Desk" Stress

Rambha works long hours every day and barely manages to juggle her work life with her responsibilities at home. Her husband Shirish and their 2 little children always seem to complian that she never spends any time with them. Her schedule is so tight that she never finds time to work out or go for a walk. Not surprisingly, she has a very weak back. Long hours at work have made Rambha very susceptible to back and neck pains. Even though she is in her early thirties, Rambha already feels ages old!

What Is Desk Stress? People who work long hours sitting at a desk often suffer from a particular form of stress. This is visible in the form of headaches, loss of eye sight, back pain, shoulder/neck pain, dizziness, insomnia, stiff muscles etc. All these things are a direct result of sitting at a desk for long hours and staring into a computer screen. The "Desk" stress is very common these days, especially amongst our young adults who invariably work at jobs where the risk for desk stress is inherent.

Beat Desk Stress The most obvious way to get rid of Desk Stress is to get up from your desk, right? But with the kind of target driven pressure that most jobs come with, it is hardly possible for people to leave their desks and go for a jog in the park. So what can you do? Memsaab has put together a couple of ways for you to break free of Desk Stress without compromising on your responsibilities at work.

5 Minute Break: Give yourself a 5 minute break every hour. Get out of your chair and use these 5 minutes for the workout mentioned below.

5 Minute Workout: Don't think that 5 minutes is insufficient for any kind of exercise. You are not trying to lose a pot belly here. All you want to do is relax your stiff muscles. 5 minutes every now and then is enough. Slowly rotate your neck a few times in each direction. Move your shoulders in a few times in circular motion. Do a few repititions of wrist rotations as well. Bend your neck sideways, as if trying to touch the shoulder. Repeat this exercise a few times for both the sides.

Soothe Those Eyes: Rub the palms of your hands together and immediately press on your closed eyes. Repeat a few times. Try to splash cold water into your eyes at least 3-4 times during your working hours.

Serve Yourself: Instead of calling out for the office boy to do everything for you, get your tea/water/files etc yourself. This gives you an opportunity to leave your chair and walk a few steps at least 3-4 times during the day.

Drink Water: It is important to keep yourself hydrated while you are working. So be careful about drinking a lot of water throughout the day.
