Traditionally, it’s always been the man’s prerogative. You, the woman, were just expected to wait for ‘him’ to make a move. And if ‘he’ was too shy, you might as well forget about the whole thing. Many a relationships (that could have turned into marriages) did not see the light of the day because the woman would/could not make the first move. But times have changed now. It is acceptable for women to make the first move. You see a guy at a party, you go and strike up a conversation, you show interest, and if he needs more…you ask him out. It’s as simple as that! Bole to ekdum easy!

The reason men have always done the asking is that men love the thrill of the chase. And women, on the other hand, like to be wanted and desired. So ‘men doing the asking and the chasing’ has worked well for a long long long time. But since the women’s lib kicked off, things have changed. As women gain independence, they no longer run their lives around the need to ‘be wanted’. Now women realize that they can also ‘want’. Apun ladki log bhi line maar sakte hain re!

Look at it this way: If you wanted to work with Infosys (or any other company), would you stand outside the office and stare at the building every evening? Would you just talk about it to your friends and do nothing else? Or would you check out the company’s website and see if they’re hiring, send in your resume, get in touch with someone you know there, etc? See the point?

Now that you have heard all the arguments in favour of asking out that cool dude who lives across the street, you just have to make up your mind. Sometimes, men are so scared of rejection that they just won’t ask you. This is when you get all those mixed signals. But tension nahi lene ka! You, the modern woman, can ask him out.
