For a nation that boasts of being the second most populous nation in the world, we are not very forthcoming about sex, are we? Survey after survey points out how strong is the libido of our western counterparts or how they are more open to experimentation in sex. In fact, their movies are also quite open about sex scenes and boast of some of the best shot love-making scenes. Our own desi films have been “creatively inspired” from movies such as “Fatal Attraction” and in fact the Hollywood Blockbuster “Pretty Woman” has inspired at least two Hindi versions.
It is the age of internet and information overdose as they say. So then why is Sex still talked about behind closed bedroom doors? Why is it that parents still don’t feel comfortable about their teenage daughters coming home after 9 p.m. Why is going to pubs or discotheques still taboo for our teenage girls? In a typical Indian household, if you happen to eavesdrop on the conversation, then it is sure to revolve around how the neighbours’ daughter wears short skirts and is not doing well in her studies, and about how Tulsi is back, and now the TRPs of Kyunki are sure to hit the ceiling once again. Why we might even end up discussing about how educative “Discovery” and “National Geographic” are, never mind if we don’t spend beyond five minutes on any of these channels in a week. But Sex – do we ever discuss it? Have you honestly ever discussed with your closest friend or family member anything about Sex?
We leave this topic open to debate. Are we okay just as we are or is it time to start talking?
