Marriage. Something that the Indian girls used to “dream” about, now gives them the dread of losing all their freedom!

Today, the Global Indian Woman is independent and moving ahead confidently in life like never before! With career taking a high priority quite early in their lives, marriage comes as a speed breaker. Apart from job displacement, it demands adjustment in many fronts including emotional, friends and social circle, traditions, family life, leisure time and so on.

Meera married her long-time boyfriend Khushwant last year. Everyone, including Meera and Khush, considers this a match made in heaven. Theirs is your typical “…lived happily ever after” kinda story. The only hitch is that Meera is not really happy. After a couple of months into the marriage, it dawned on Meera that love was not enough to make a marriage work. The differences between her old and new families seemed petty before marriage. But now the same differences often become a bone of contention between Meera and Khush.

Recently my friend Anamika separated from her husband Piyush. Anamika had met Piyush three years ago. After an affair that lasted for over a year, they got married. And my poor friend got the shock of her life when Piyush told her that he wanted a divorce. Barely eighteen months into the marriage, Piyush had fallen in love with another woman!!! The sad part was that Anamika never suspected it. Her husband was having an affair right under her nose, and she didn’t realize it.

Finally, Sanju Baba and Manyata tied the knot today.

All Sanjay Dutt and Manyata did last year was deny the reports of a marriage. They stuck by their “close friends” stance throughout the year. Sanjay had a not too good year. 2007 was marked by his two innings at the Pune jail. But long-time girlfriend Manyata stood by him through thick and thin.
