How Bad Is It?:
Breast cancer is a serious disease and can also be fatal. If detected in time, breast cancer can be fought successfully. So theres your argument for annual mammograms, women!!! It sure helps to know how to do a self examination every month. Treatment is possible only if breast cancer is detected in the early stages.
Self-examination is the key to early detection. You should conduct self-examination of your breasts on the same day of every month. Any changes in size, shape, tenderness, appearance of lumps, or nipple discharge should be reported to your doctor.
Every woman above forty should also have a Mammogram done annually.
Treatment: There are various forms of treatment available. Your doctor will choose one depending on the stage of breast cancer.
Surgery: Removal of the lump or the tumor is the most preferred form of treatment. The doctor may also choose to remove the lymph nodes. Removal of breast is an option for the more serious cases.
Chemotherapy: Breast cancer can also be treated with administration of chemicals that interfere with the growth and spreading of the cancer cells.
Hormonal Therapy: Since estrogen is known to increase the risk, anti-estrogens or other hormone inhibitors may be used for fighting the cancer.
Radiation Therapy: X-Rays or other high energy rays are applied to the lump and its surrounding areas to kill the cancer cells.
Emotional disturbances caused by detection, symptoms, treatment and other issues can be huge. There are many online support groups for cancer patients that can be useful. Support groups help in dealing with the uncertainty and body image related issues that are inherent in cancer treatment.
If you are overtly concerned about your body-image, dont worry. There are options available today that will help you keep looking the way you do. No one need know that you have had to go under the doctors knife. But nevertheless, it is best for you emotional and physical well-being that you conduct regular self-examination and go for an annual mammogram.
