so basically women are the ones governing the dominance of wither sex in small and big screen. on TV they love to idolise the "tulsis and parvatis"; in movies they love to idolise " SRK's and ABs". Oh! be a little kind! allot some role to the poor men in our society! ;)
Vaise, i dont thing th tulsi's and parvati's are idolisable! how many husbands do they change yaar! thats less than the average number of boyfriends young girls change today!
we had more movies based on women's stories till some time back. as we r moving on in the times, we r actually going back as far as condition of women is concerned.
Film industry is male dominated, coz women hv the urge to idlolise and fall in love with the heroes. But our men r different. They neither idolise, nor fall in love with heroines. so heroines don't become popular enough to carry a movie on their own. But the hero can. This explains why very few female-dominated movies succeed, or r even made in Bollywood.
so simple: most housewives across India watch these "soaps", some with open mouths!, even discuss each character in detail and comment on them, copy their dress styles, mannerisms, style of talking. What I find most amusing is that nowadays girls call their mothers "mama" a word which to my thinking is antiquated and belongs to the old victorian england. Americans are more with it, using simple "mom" but Indian girls go "mamma" aping the gooey soaps. Brings to mind the storey about the man with the caps and the monkey on the tree.
I wudnt be so harsh! I think that young people do not watch too many of the soaps. They r more into reality TV. But for old timers, soaps provide some entertainment. They look for solutions to their own problems in these soaps. The soaps reinforce their morals and the principles that they believe in-truthfulnes, justice, honesty, rigteousness etc. So they look up to the tulsis and parvatis like icons. Frankly speaking, I don't see too much harm in this. why do you?
