This is a sad day for Bollywood. Our dear Munna Bhai (affectionately called Sanju Baba) was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for six years for illegal possession of weapons that were given to him by associates of gangster Dawood Ibrahim ahead of the 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. He was also fined Rs. 25,000 by the special TADA court.
Sanjay Dutt has already spent around sixteen months in jail, in two stints during the trial. Currently he was free on bail. After passing the judgment today, the judge also cancelled his bail and told the police to take him in its custody. Dutt was hoping for exemption under the Probation of Offenders (POA) Act. But the judge denied him the benefit under this ACT.
Since quite some time the media had been speculating about the outcome of this case. The general opinion was that Sanju Baba would get minimal punishment, if any. But todays judgment has changed all that. Anyone can imagine what a whopping loss this means for Bollywood.
It is estimated that Sanjay Dutt has crores riding on his head as he was involved in a couple of movies. Will these movies have to be shelved? Or will the producers and directors cast someone else in his roles? Or would they rather wait for him to be back???
All these questions plague any Bollywood wallahs mind today. But my mind is plagued with just one question..How long will we have to wait for another Munna Bhai movie?
