The Bhatts have a winner on their hands. Jannat has taken the best opening after their very famous "Raaz". Emraan Hashmi, the blue-eyed boy of the Bhatt camp, has once again delivered a surefire hit!
I wonder why I never sat up and took notice of this guy! He may not have Hritik's chicelled features or SRK's charm. He might even be called a little flabby. But Emraan is not one to be ignored. He's got something that immediately endears him to the audence. And I'm not talking about his kissing prowess at all! Debutant Sonal Chauhan gives an alost believable performance. In case didnt know, Esha Deol was supposed to do this film initially. But Esha's loss is clearly Sonal's gain. The Bhatt's have signed her for their next film "Raaz -2". Yes, that's a sequel to "Raaz".
Coming back to "Jannat", Emraan delivers a superb performance in a film supported by a good script. He plays a small time crook who is blessed with an intuition that every successful gambler needs. So the wonderboy gets into criket betting. Soonhe becomes a bookie and puts many bookies out of business. The kingpin of this betting stuff hires our hero to make money for him. Emraan does it by fixing the matches. Girlfriend Zoya (Sonal)tries desperately to break this betting/fixing connection. In the end, tragedy strikes. Like their other movies, this one has a tragic love story with match fixing as a backdrop. The director has been able to balance these two aspects of he storyline quite well. The initial few scenes where Emraan is trying to woo his lady love are quite romantic. They'll have every girl asking her boyfriend "Why cant u be like this?"!
The music is great like all other Bhatt movies. Songs are few in number, but you may find yourself humming them after you come out of the hall.
The director could have paid a little more attention to detail o make the movie more believable. For instance, howcome a Mumbai Police inspector is leading the mission in Cape Town? Do the South African police really hold Mumbai Police in such high regard? Similarly, the last scene only tells you that the hero is extremely dumb. But the rest of the movie does't show him to be dumb at all.....
A little more credibility would have made the movie much better, Mr. Bhatt. But nevertheless, the movie rocks as it is. Like other Bhatt camp mobvies, this one also deals with a real issue. The audience tends to identify with the protagonist. The movie tries to show both the good and bad side of betting. My only cncern is that youngsters get impressed with the good/glam side too easily. How many new entrants into the betting business will this movie bring, God only knows!
