How To Develop A Good Relationship With Your Boss

Shelly works with an advertising agency as a copywriter. She works quite hard at her job, yet her boss hates her. Not only is Ramya (her boss) rude, curt and insulting to her, she also almost always refuses to give Shelly any time off. Shelly has been working in the same role for almost three years now. Yet, no promotion anywhere in sight!

Manisha also works under Ramya. She is new to the team, but she has won the confidence of her boss in the short time she has worked with her. Ramya trusts her with important projects and meetings. Manisha recently availed of a paid leave for two weeks. She is also expecting to be promoted to the position of senior copywriter.

Why?

Ever wondered why your colleague just got a promotion while you were overlooked?
Do you wonder what it takes to get into the good books of your boss?

Here are a few things you can do to get your boss to like you and appreciate your contribution to the organization.

Work Hard And Be Noticed

This is the easiest one to guess. Of course hard work will pay off finally. But for your hard work to pay off NOW, you have to get your work noticed. Don’t be satisfied with oblivion. If you are making a contribution, let your boss see it. Unless your hard work is noticed, you might as well be not working at all.

Don’t Gossip, Especially About The Boss

If your boss sees you chatting away at the water cooler more often than he sees you working at your desk, he’s bound to have a low opinion of you. Also, contributing to the office gossip is not really the best way to get into your boss’ good books. And finally, please don’t gossip about your boss EVER. This can cost you your job.

Don’t Be a Chamcha/Chamchi

If you think that buttering up your boss will make him respect you, you are wrong. No boss likes a ‘yes-man’ or a ‘yes-woman’. Being a ‘yes-man’ closes all doors to future advancement because the boss will see you as an incompetent employee. If you want your boss to respect you, agree or disagree with him depending on the situation.

Be Professional

Professionalism should ooze out of you when you are in office. Dress smartly and formally, keep your hair/nails trimmed and take care of your appearance. Always reach office in time. Abstain from cracking jokes all the time. Have a purpose while you are in office and let it be seen.

Be Innovative

Good creative ideas are the shortest way into your boss’ good books. No boss can deny respect to an employee who comes up with solutions to problems or takes initiatives like cost-cutting etc. Don’t always come up with problems only, come up with solutions at times. Be creative and try to think out of the box.

Be Honest

Honesty is still valued as a trait, especially in employees. So do not try to project an image of yourself that’s not true. Don’t take on work that your cannot deliver. Don’t fudge with the figures and certainly don’t mess with the company’s money.

Admiring and looking up to your boss can be quite useful. Instead of cracking jokes about your boss, try to identify his good traits. He has to have something that you don’t. Why else would he be your boss, right? Try to learn from him and give him his due respect. Soon you will find yourself being appreciated by him.
