Dr. Deeksha has been practicing medicine for many years now. When we asked her about the most common ailments amongst women, she named two. The first is PCOD and the second is backache. In her own words, “Almost every woman has suffered from backache at some point in her life. Most common incidence of backache is seen during pregnancy and in the years that follow. Most patients assume that the backache will never go away and try to accept it as a part of their lives!”
So, are you one of the many women suffering from chronic back pain? Are you learning to live a life handicapped by this “most common complaint”?
First of all, let us begin by getting rid of the myth that backache cannot be cured. Backache can be cured successfully. All you need to do is learn the right way to treat your back!
Know Your Back
The back can be divided into two sections for a layman.
Upper Back: This includes the top as well as the middle part of your back. Upper back comprises the part of the spine that covers and protects vital internal organ in this area. Upper back is responsible for the postures we take, and it also bears the brunt of incorrect postures!
Pain in the Upper Back is not as common as that in the lower back. But if you do suffer from Upper Back Ache, we will provide you tips and strategies to deal with it.
Lower Back: This is the area starting from your waist, and downwards. This part of the spine is responsible for movement and rotation, just like the neck.
Most people complain of pain in the Lower Back. Lower Back is susceptible to injuries that lead to unending pain and agony.
Reasons Why You Suffer From Backache
• The spinal chord is made up of many discs that degenerate with age. As the discs degenerate, they tend to adhere with each other through bony unions. This condition is called spondylosis. Due to this defect, the spine shortens in length and becomes inflexible.
• The most common reason for backache is poor posture. The correct posture is neither “straight like a rod” nor is it “curved like a noodle”. The correct posture is more relaxed than the former and firmer than the latter.
• Leading a sedentary life is another reason for backache. Occupations that involve sitting at a desk or in front of a computer for many hours are the most dangerous in this regard.
• Medical factors like kidney/prostate problems, gynecological disorders, arthritis, influenza, emotional stress etc also lead to back pain.
• Accidents and injuries can also harm your spinal chord, leaving you prone to backache.
• Exercising mishaps are another very common reason for backache. Not stretching before starting the routine, or improper lifting of weights can damage the spine.
Now that we have listed the causes for backache, you should be able to identify the root cause in your own case. Once you know the cause, it will become easier to treat the problem.
