Are you model material or not?
If you have done the necessary evaluation of your height, weight and body structure, you would have come to a conclusion by now. If you think you have what this profession demands, Congratulations! Half the battle is already won. Now you just need to get into the practicalities of things. A little preparation, a little training and a lot of hard-work, is the way to go now!
Step 1: Getting A Portfolio Made
First of all, you need to invest in a quality portfolio of your pictures. This portfolio is your fashion-resume, and will be your key into the world of modeling. What you need to do is get in touch with a very good photographer to do your first photo-shoot. You need to lookup a professional “fashion photographer”. Your portfolio should showcase your ability to carry off different styles of clothes and accessories.
Before you start the photo-shoot, you will need to buy a few items and have them ready for use at the shoot.
Casual Look- Blue jeans, sports & knit tops, button up tops, shorts, cutoff blue jeans, etc.
Corporate Look – A business suit..
Sporty Look (exercise, uniforms, shorts, etc.) – Shorts, sports bra, tees, lowers etc.
Lingerie - If you plan to enter the lingerie market, a few pictures in this style are a must.
Beach Look – You need a bikini that really flatters you.
A few props like hats, neckties, men's shirts, jackets, etc.
Besides this, you should also have an assortment of pantyhose and socks in different colors. You should have a good collection of undergarments in different styles. You will also need a robe to wear between changes in the photo-shoot, and a scarf to wear while changing. This will help in keeping your make-up off your own or other people’s clothes!
Step 2: Contacting Modeling Agencies
Now that you have your portfolio ready, you are all set for the hard work! The second step on your road to fame and success, is to get in touch with modeling agencies and coordinators. Send a picture and your resume to these agencies. If they think that you are model material, they will surely get back to you and ask for an appointment. During the meeting, show off your best side with absolute confidence. If you are considered suitable, the agency will offer you work and will charge you a fee per assignment.
Some of these modeling agencies are known to take aspiring models for a ride. Do not choose an agency that asks for money without offering you an assignment. Any money you pay to the agency should come from your modeling assignment fee only. Similarly, if the agency tries to pressurize you into signing a contract immediately, be very careful and read the contract thoroughly.
Handling Failure
If you are rejected, do not feel dejected or give up. The journey has just begun, dearie! When rejected, ask for more information. Request the agency to tell you on what basis were you rejected. Ask them if you need to lose weight, or get some skin treatment or hair treatment or dental work etc. Use your failure as a stepping stone to future success.
A few modeling agencies offer training programs to wannabe models. If you think the agency is reputable, you could benefit from such programs. Even otherwise, try to work on skills like communication, patience, business skills, negotiation, stamina, confidence etc. Interpersonal skills are very important for models also. A friendly and amiable approach can surely take you places!
