One of my friends has recently seperated from his wife. The couple never got along with each other. after fighting each other for 5 years, they have decided to split. But both their families are hell bent on not letting them get a divorce. The families feel that marriage is too important to give up.

i dont thnk its comparable to a sick business unit at all. there r ways to turn around a sick unit, but a marriage on the verge of divorce cannot be turned around. Unless one feels as strongly enough!
You Can't universalise!
You cannot say that marriage is too important to give up COMe WHAT MAY! Neither can you say that one should stop believing in the concept of marriage! Divrce is not an instrument of achieving independence, its a well thought out decsion for the good of two people.
It should be taken with our brains, not heart. And it should be taken only when there is no other way out. because it does not bring happiness to anyone. Its like selling off a sick business unit. Its important, bt its not a happy event.

Wow! I am amazed at how independently women think these days. It's to be appreciated I suppose! But it's just that if more and more women think like this, marriage will soon become redundant. People will stop bothering to marry and get divorced after some time. Much easier to just live together as long as compatible!

I completely agre with Delhigal. I ahte my husband and I want a divorce. Why should I not get one? Why should I only be expected to think abt social norms etc? He did not think of many things while betraying me. Why do I need to think at all?

In this day and age, it is surprising that people even still believe in marriage. Divorce is a necessity because in today's life, very few couples actually get along with each other. For couples who hate each other, divorce is like a life saver. Why attach a stigma to it/ What's wrong with it? Why consider marriage as something spiritual?
I think I agree that
I think I agree that marriage is too important to give up. I would never give up, come what may. Like evrything else, marriage has its challenges and we need to deal with them. It is very easy to pack up and leave. But there's no guarantee that there will be no regrets.
