Out of hundreds of movies produced in India every year, only a few actually click with the masses. 2007 was a relatively good year for Bollywood. We had many hits and we saw two new trends emerge in the industry.

The first new trend that emerged in 2007 was that of sports based movies. ’Ta Ra Rum Pum’, ‘Apne’, ‘Chak De!’ and ‘Goal’ have ushered in a new era in Bollywood. People have awakened to the knowledge that cricket is not the only sport that can be exciting (even though it still remains the single most important unifying factor in India after Bollywood)!

The other trend that 2007 brought to Bollywood was the return of the Seventies. Everything retro is suddenly in. Retro looks, hairstyles, clothes, accessories, remakes of movies, the works!

So which movies clicked and which movies bombed at the cash registers in 2007? Here’s a run down on the hits and misses of the year that is almost gone…

Hits

• Guru
• Namaste London
• Partner
• Chak De!
• Bhool Bhulaiya
• Hey Baby!
• Jab We Met
• Om Shanti Om

Okie Dokie

• Salaam-E-Ishq
• Ta Ra Rum Pum
• Apne
• Aapka Suroor
• Dhamaal
• Saawariya
• Aaja Nach Le

Misses

• Traffic Signal
• Eklavya
• Honeymoon Travels
• Nishabd
• Shaka-Laka-Boom-Boom
• Cheeni Kum
• Shootout at Lokhandvala
• Life In A Metro
• Fool N Final
• Naqab
• Cash
• Gandhi My Father
• Jhoom Barabr Jhoom
• Dhol
• Darling
• Laga Churni Mein Daag
• Johnny Gaddar

So it wasn’t a good year for the Bachchans. Amit ji’s two films bombed and Abhishek could not make much of his guest appearances in many of these movies. But ‘Guru’ was a milestone movie for the junior Bachchan and his work was much appreciated. Hritik, on the other hand was completely missing from the scene.

The most bankable stars now are Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan. While Akki delivered 3 of the biggest hits of this year, SRK was the guiding force behind 2 of this year’s biggest hits. In fact, SRK’s home production ‘OSO’ has broken all previous records and will always be remembered as a milestone movie for Indian cinema.
