We also discussed the volume of raise that one may demand and expect. In this second article on the same topic, we bring you tips on how to actually go about the business of asking for a raise.
How To?
Now comes the tricky part. Planning for it is one thing, asking for a raise can be an unpleasant experience for most people. Following tips will help you in being prepared.
1. Schedule A Meeting: Dont just walk-in on your boss and ask for a raise. He might be in the middle of something and you may end up getting the frown. So ask for an appointment at least one day in advance.
2. Outline Your Accomplishments: You should come to this meeting armed with a list of your accomplishments at work. Show your boss how you have made valuable contribution to the team as well as the organization. Be armed with numbers if possible.
3. Negotiate: When your boss comes up with an offer for a raise, think about it before reacting. If it is in line with your expectations, you just have to thank the boss. But if it seems inadequate, you can negotiate. But negotiation should not mean giving your boss an ultimatum.
4. Be Flexible: If your boss does not make you an adequate offer, be open and flexible about it. There are ways of getting a non-cash raise. You can ask for more vacation time, fewer work hours, flexi-time, better workspace, reserved parking etc. You can also ask for career betterment options like cross department training, new projects, more responsibility etc.
5. Future Review: If this review does not go as planned, set the stage for a future review. Meanwhile work on your skills and accomplishments. Ask your boss for suggestions on how you can improve and how you can make more contributions to the department and company so that you can get to where you want to be. Better luck this time!!!
