When it comes to health and fitness, the biggest challenge for Indian people is our love for carbs. We have grown up eating sabzi roti and dal chawal. Carbohydrates are our comfort food and we just can't say no to them. We have learnt to eat big portions of food comprising a lot of carb, a little protein and a little of everything else. Our youth have an additional problem. We love pasta, Chinese noodles, burgers, pizzas and everything else that is fast and unhealthy! So people are always looking for ways to beat these carb cravings. One solution is Zoodles.
What are Zoodles? Zoodles are fake noodles that you can make for yourself at home, using Zucchini. Zucchini is easily available everywhere these days. It is a great substitute for pasta or noodles. It is fresh, it is easy to make, it is not too expensive, it is full of nutrition, and it is much lower in calories and carbs!
One cup of cooked noodles or pasta give you approximately 220 calories and 43 g of carbohydrates.
One cup of zoodles will give you 25 calories and 4.3 g of carbohydrates! Amazing, isn't it?
You can make zoodles using a spiralizing tool. Most food processors will have one for you. If you cannot access a spiralizing tool, you could make Ribbon pasta from your zucchini, by peeling it from all sides with a peeler - till you reach the soft and mushy core. One regular size zucchini will yield two cups of zoodles.
To make your zoodles interesting, toss them with olive oil, salt and pepper. Add your favorite ingresitenst like garlic, ginger, onions, carrots, corn, peas etc. You will love the dish, and what it does for you.
You can make similar pasta or noodles from carrots, sweet potatoes, beetroots, squash, cucumber, broccoli stalks and cabbage - red or green!
